This is a reminder of your obligations regarding Employment Eligibility Verification compliance! In August, the U.S. Citizenship, and Immigration Services (USCIS) released the revised Form I-9 and made it accessible to employers. As of November 1, you need to be using the updated Form I-9.
A remote verification alternative is also available to qualified employers. Previously, you had to physically inspect an employee's original identity and work authorization documents alongside the Form I-9. However, as of August 1, authorized E-Verify employers have the option to remotely examine employees' documents.
Tips to ensure compliance:
Train employees who are responsible for completing Form I-9.
If applicable, update your E-Verify policy and process.
Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of E-Verify to determine whether your business should use the remote verification alternative.
The revised Form I-9 is available here. The new form comes with instructions, so review closely. You can also speak to an HR consultant or employment attorney for more guidance.
