Holiday Party Reminders

This is the time of year when company celebrations abound. Here are a few tips to have a safe, fun, and successful event.

Attendance should be voluntary. If attendance is mandatory for a social function outside of normal business hours, non-exempt employees must be compensated for their time. If attendance is not required, there should be no negative consequence or statements made to employees who choose not to attend. Also remember that some employees may not celebrate the same holidays that you do, or holidays at all.

Alcohol. Anytime alcohol is involved, there are additional risks present. Implement a practice to limit consumption. You can host a limited amount of alcohol by providing drink tickets or consider a time limit for company sponsored alcohol service. For private events, hire a professional bartender. Also ensure you have a non-alcoholic alternative available.

Provide transportation. Consider offering ride share service or shuttles to ensure everyone makes it home safely.

Workplace conduct rules still apply. Even if your drug and alcohol policy is modified for an event, employees must still act respectfully and in accordance with your company code of conduct.

Invite Significant Others. There are various advantages to inviting significant others to the company party. It may help to increase employee engagement, foster a feeling of team and community, and usually helps keep the conduct festive but professional.
