Definition of close contact updated once again

California employers are in for another treat! The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued an order amending the definition of “close contact” once again.


Effective June 8, the CDPH removed the “within six feet” verbiage from the definition of “close contact.” This expanded what is considered “close contact” after an employee with COVID-19 was in the workplace. The updated definition would include anyone in an “open air space” for 15 minutes or longer during the employee’s infectious period.


Effective immediately (October 14, 2022), the “within six feet” verbiage applies to workspaces of 400,000 cubic feet or more. This typically means open-floor-plan office, warehouses, or large retail stores. Workspaces of less than 400,000 cubic feet will need to continue abiding by the current “open air space” definition.
